UI/UX in the Matrix: Surviving and Thriving in AR/VR and Game Design
Alright, settle down. You're probably here because, like many, you're pondering the future. Maybe you've seen the job numbers – UI/UX looks tiny next to the monstrous appetite for software engineers. Maybe you're just starting out, drowning in advice about Figma and portfolios, wondering if you're picking the right boat. Or maybe, just maybe, you're an old hand (like me, trying to pretend I'm not) eyeing the horizon, seeing clouds that look suspiciously like AI and wondering if your carefully honed skills are about to become... obsolete.
Well, pull up a virtual chair. While everyone's freaking out about saturated markets or the AI overlords taking their Figma files, there's a whole universe of design out there that's still in its glorious, awkward, slightly terrifying infancy: designing for immersive worlds. The AI Question (Again) and Your Career Path
So, does AI replace the designer here? I highly doubt it, at least not the good ones. Yes, AI tools are popping up everywhere (like AnthrAI, mentioned in a discussion, for feedback and testing simulations – cool!). They can help with grunt work, generate variations, or provide automated testing feedback.
But designing intuitive, comfortable, even magical experiences in 3D space? Understanding the subtle psychological impact of spatial design, the ethics of using biometric data, or simply knowing why a user feels sick when your camera moves a certain way? That requires a deep understanding of human behaviour, creativity, and empathy that AI isn't close to replicating. AI is a tool. In complex, cutting-edge fields like this, it's an accelerator, not a replacement.
If you're graduating high school or looking to switch careers, don't despair about UI/UX demand. The generalist field might feel crowded, but specialized areas like AR/VR/Game UI are desperate for talented people who aren't afraid to experiment and solve novel problems. Maybe studying Software Engineering is a smart move – understanding the tech stack behind these experiences makes you an invaluable hybrid. Or maybe you double down on design, but focus your learning on 3D tools (Unity, Unreal Engine), spatial design principles, and yes, even game design fundamentals.
I remember being taught by a boss early in my career, Mr Asif, who showed me that software didn't just need to work, it needed to "LOOK GOOD". It was my first real encounter with the concept of UX – understanding what the customer sees. That foundational principle holds true in immersive worlds, but the "seeing" is literal and all-encompassing. You're designing the entire perceived reality.
Learning resources? Online courses (Udemy is a start), but more importantly: experiment. Get an Oculus Quest (or whatever the latest flavour is), download VRChat, play games, use AR apps. See what works and what sucks. Learn by doing. Join communities (like the one I saw someone excited about joining their first UX meetup!). Don't just take a course; live in the experiences you want to design.
Errors I've Made (So You Don't Have To)
